The world’s first known movable-type was invented in China around 1040 by Bi Sheng, using ceramics. The oldest surviving book printed in metallic movable type was printed in 1377, in Korea, but had been in use for over a hundred years by then.
The printing press was first introduced to Europe around 1440. A single Renaissance printing press could produce 3,600 pages per workday versus only a few pages by hand-copying.
Jodocus Badius (1462-1535) established his printing house in 1503. The cover image on this book shows one of his frontispieces with his monogram at the bottom.
